Does your dog or cat have sensitive skin? At Chico, we know just how important it is to choose the right type of shampoo for your pet. Using the correct product can benefit their health and well-being. Here are some tips for choosing the right pet shampoo.
Only use products designed for dogs and cats
Your pet’s skin isn’t like the skin on your own scalp. First off, it’s much more delicate. A dog’s skin, for example, has a neutral pH, whereas a human’s skin is slightly acidic. As a result, it can become irritated by shampoos and shower gels meant for humans. This includes products designed for babies or ones advertised as gentle. Only use products specifically designed for dogs or cats. Note that there are special shampoos for puppies and kittens.
Determine your pet’s needs
Does your pet have skin issues, such as itchiness, rashes, dry skin, eczema or atopic dermatitis?
Knowing what sort of skin problem your dog or cat has will allow you to determine which type of shampoo will give them relief. For example, your pet may benefit from a hydrating, anti-itch or hypoallergenic shampoo. Alternatively, your animal companion may need a medicated shampoo such as TropiClean to combat fleas, parasites, dandruff or eczema.
Be sure tp consult a qualified veterinarian or pet grooming specialist to get your pet’s skin examined.
Favour natural products
Some common shampoos contain chemicals that may irritate your pet’s delicate skin. If your dog or cat has sensitivities, it’s best to stick to natural products that treat skin problems using active ingredients such as aloe vera gel (a natural plant product that offers relief from itchy and damaged skin).
Rejuvenate your pet’s fur
Note that some therapeutic shampoos are designed specifically for certain types and colours of fur. Consider killing two birds with one stone with a shampoo that also conditions hair and restores its colour (especially if your pet has white or dark-coloured fur).
